Q. NAID has revamped the CSDS exam this year and is now
utilizing the Information Disposition textbook vs. the
previous study guide as the material to prepare for
the exam. As a member of the BOR you assisted in the
development of the textbook. How does this new format
differ from the previous CSDS program and why did NAID
go this route?
A. The changes are still rolling out. At all times the BoR has
worked to be thoughtful and careful to balance the competing
interests of time and difficulty vs. ease and costs. Having
a textbook as a knowledge-base authority is a major game
changer for us, and I would suspect there is a high likelihood
that over time rote memorization will fade away and give way
to more authentic subject matter mastery.
Q. What type of employee should become a CSDS? Is it
only for presidents and sales people?
A. I would certainly recommend starting at the top with
leadership and definitely in sales. I’m not sure it’s a great fit for
operational or admin employees, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt.
A major candidate-type that I see as having a lot of potential
are professionals who are our customers (not employees
of a shredding services company) that are responsible for
information destruction. I am looking forward to that future
date when we can see that happening.
Q. What advice do you have for other data destruction
A. Well… if you’re in my market, I hope you never learn any of this,
and that if you do, you’ll think everything I say is simply the
ramblings of a NAID-crazed-weirdo, and you do nothing. For
everyone else, I would say “this is a no brainer...get involved
and reap the benefits!”
