“While the first year of the MWMA has exceeded expectation,
there are still some involved in both secure destruction and
medical waste that have not joined both associations,” says
Johnson. “It’s a mistake to think that NAID and MWMA are two
sides of one coin. They are separate and standalone, with very
different and specific missions.”
A little more than a year ago, the MWMA began operation
as an autonomous, standalone 501(c)( 6) non-profit trade
association. As such, it has its own corporate charter, bylaws,
a dedicated board of directors, and treasury. Before the
MWMA, there had been no such dedicated organization.
“There is no denying that many NAID members called for the
creation of the MWMA because so many secure destruction
services were diversifying into that business,” says NAID CEO
Bob Johnson. “They had experienced what NAID had done
on the secure destruction side of things and wanted a strong
organization for their emerging industry.”
To encourage membership, the MWMA has waived the one-time initiation fee for those joining in 2018. Additionally,
medical waste service providers joining now will be eligible to
vote in the association’s historic first open board of directors
Shred School Wrap Up
NAID put on four Shred Schools in 2017 between August and
November. Locations included the first ever Shred School
Down Under, in Sydney Australia, as well as events in Austin,
TX, Los Angeles, CA, and Orlando, FL. 100% of all attendees
who returned a survey on the event said they would attend
Shred School again.
The ringing endorsement came internally as well. NAID
Director of Marketing & Communications, Kelly Martínez, has
been with the association for more than a year now. As there
were eleven new sessions to this year’s curriculum, Martínez
was part of the re-mix and had this to say about her first
Shred School, “I didn’t walk away thinking, ‘another good NAID
event’ – I walked away breathlessly impressed. I am proud to
work for an association that offers this caliber of educational
material and honored to be a part of the training team.” Read
Martínez’s full first impressions on the NAIDnotes blog.
