you have access to a large population in a single proximity and
with it access to all of their families and all of those associated
documents. This single source offers the biggest opportunity.
Logistically, as a service provider you would sell the shred
bags to the school for $10 to cover costs. The students would
turn around and re-sell the bags with service for $20. The
extra $10 goes toward the school fundraiser or charitable
donation. The shredding firm comes back on the appointed
day and shreds all the paper in the shred bags. Maybe it even
becomes an annual event.
Sports – This same application and method can be applied to
an evening sporting event, such as a Friday night football, with
return service for the shredding event a month later.
HOA Communities – HOAs can leverage this by organizing
through the secretary or treasurer. Bag drop offs can be at
garages and then hosting a designated shred day.
Realtors & Moving Companies – Create strategic partnerships
with local realtors and moving companies, teaching them
about purges. Then, give away bags to them for free as a
value-add for their clients who are moving. Those people
would then call to arrange for the purge pick-up and pay a
Nursing Homes/Retirement Communities – With a rise in
scams among seniors, many have obtained their own shredder
to mitigate risk. There is a cultural fear factor and these are
waiting to learn about secure shredding.
Geographically Limited – Some providers found with the
island nature of Hawaii that the regular console bags were
dragging, getting dirty, and ripping. Because these disposable
bags are light weight, they were easy and inexpensive to fly in,
and then the entire bag could be shredded. It provided a solid
solution to a geographically limited location.
Mail - Shred bags can even be sent via UPS in the mail and
then you can charge a $20 fee to pick-up and confidentially
shred (note: while you can mail these bags empty, it goes
against NAID AAA Certification to ship a full bag).
Other Constraints – Whether geography complicates picks-ups,
physical office space is a concern, or for use with unscheduled
routes or a smaller home business, where situations create
constraints for traditional shred bins, shred bags (reusable or
paper) are a viable solution.
If you haven’t used shred bags before, you may want to start
small with 100 bags as a trial and then work up to a larger
quantity. Consider offering a free bag with every service to
generate interest. You can then determine if utilizing in one of
these applications makes sense for your network.
Shred Bags Keep it Simple
It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3:
1. Fill it
2. Seal it
3. Shred it
The concept isn’t difficult. And you can leverage the
environmental factor – the whole thing gets recycled. Build
your story. Educate your customers on what is a wise process
for handling their sensitive materials.
Remember, all of the providers out there offer services like
secure shredding, records storage, or, scanning. Diversification
is a necessity. If not, eventually, you’ll be out of business.
Opportunity is out there. There are how many? 120 million
homes. 328 million people in the US alone. Wouldn’t you want
1% of that as reoccurring business coming through?
